Ameen Pishdadi founded Arlington Heights-based Gigenet, employs about 35 workers and plans to add services to grow the company even more.
Through his Web hosting and data storage company, this 29-year-old Hoffman Estates man has his hand on the pulse of the Internet. His clients include developers and re-sellers of services, or anyone who needs a dedicated server. Those clients serve thousands of other major corporations and organizations, from Tyson Foods to the St. Louis Rams.
"I first started out on the bottom of the food chain, and now we have several layers in between," said Pishdadi.
Pishdadi's enpreneurial spirit went full steam when he created a company with his brother in 1999 called Global Web Host. While the brothers went their separate ways by 2002, Pishdadi took on a partner and created Ecomdevel LLC, which led to a first data storage center and quickly grew. By 2004, Ecomdevel served a niche market, including financial companies. The business soon outgrew its downtown Chicago office and moved operations along with more related services to Arlington Heights under the new name of Gigenet.
Today, the company has 35 workers in Arlington Heights and in New Jersey. He plans to hire about 10 more workers by the end of the year. More serves also are expected, including desktop virtualization, or cloud desktop services, where a PC is replaced with an straight Internet connection that houses all that's necessary for a particular job. The worker would then just use a monitor and get access to work anywhere, he said.
"Our goal is to get them on the Internet and keep them there, 24/7 and 365 (days a year)," said Pishdadi. "Our objective is to never go down."
Surfing: "We Want Navistar to Come to Lisle" on Facebook now has more than 900 members. The site aims to demonstrate it outranks the small contingent that supposedly discouraged the company's new headquarters from settling into the former Alcatel-Lucent building along Warrenville Road in Lisle. But will the site change the minds of Navistar executives? Was that small neighborhood group that powerful? Or is another deal luring away Navistar?

GigeNET Announces 60-Second Cloud Server Deployment
By David Hamilton, May 13, 2010
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hosted services provider GigeNET (www.gigenet.com) has announced that the latest version of its fully automated cloud server deployment platform can deploy a cloud server in as little as 60 seconds.
According to GigeNET's announcement this week, its new site GigeNETCloud (www.gigenetcloud.com) offers the fully automated delivery of a VPSHive cloud server that is nearly limitless in scalability. VPSHive is based on the Xen Hypervisor, which uses Citrix Xenserver Technology, and features high-performance central storage all on a 10Gbps network and backbone.
GigeNETCloud customers will have the ability to deploy an armada of live Cloud Servers and create additional virtual machines or templates based on the original. GigeNET's cloud solutions start at $10.00 per month or 1.3¢ an hour, with customers paying only for what is used and have unlimited private bandwidth.
VPSHive also supports transparent cloud server migrations from node to node without downtime or loss in functionality. Further, direct KVM console access gives users the ability to recover a file system failure, or malformed network configuration.
VLAN and IP addresses can be used for clustering and cloud server communications to support connectivity between private networks and GigeNET's dedicated servers.
GigeNETCloud offers a redundant cloud infrastructure and reactive 24/7 tech support to every subscriber at every level and expects to have multiple locations coming in the very near future. GigeNET said that customers can expect to see the introduction of an API, CDN, DDoS protection, automated R1soft backup configurations, an OS template repository, automated NAS/cloud storage, provisioning, and a reseller white label panel in the near future.

Q&A: GigeNet founder on the future of cloud computing
Posted by Ann D. at 6/22/2010 8:10 AM CDT on Chicago Business
Ameen Pishdadi and his brother founded their first Web-hosting company when Ameen was 17. After amassing several hundred customers, they lost interest in the business — they kept hosting the clients’ Web sites but stopped billing them. In 2002, Ameen Pishdadi re-entered the business, leasing part of a data center in downtown Chicago and another in St. Louis, and then selling dedicated server usage to companies. His company, GigeNet, now has 6,000 customers (including companies such as Tyson Foods, BMI and the Pittsburgh Steelers), 35 employees and its own data center in Arlington Heights.
Mr. Pishdadi, 29, is now pushing cloud computing — a decentralized method of hosting, where a client’s data is hosted by a cluster of connected servers, rather than one machine. He tells Crain’s contributor Steve Hendershot about GigeNet’s plans and the future of cloud computing.
Crain’s: How can cloud computing help GigeNet expand?
Ameen Pishdadi: It’s a lot easier to grow and expand to multiple locations than with dedicated servers, which use more room. A thousand dedicated servers takes probably 30 or 40 times more space than a thousand cloud servers. With the cloud, we’ll be able to expand much more quickly because we don’t need to purchase an entire data center, we can just go into an existing data center, rent out some space and we’ve got a new location. Our software is already ready to go — we have the ability to control multiple locations, multiple pools (of servers).
By the end of year, we’re planning on having locations on the West Coast, East Coast, in the South and in Europe. We’re looking to move into the West Coast in the next 60-90 days. We can turn up a new city in two weeks.
Crain’s: Since cloud computing is hosted, you know, in the cloud, what’s the advantage of all these different physical locations?
AP: You can use the services from anywhere, but the closer (the data centers) are to the customer, then you have lower latency and the faster you serve the data. If the target area is L.A., you want your server hosted in L.A. It’s also good to have redundancy, because you may need your site to be highly available. So with multiple locations, if something happens in Chicago but we also have data centers in L.A. and New York, your site is still up. It gives us choices, the ability to handle outages and means we are prepared for disaster recovery.
Crain’s: What’s the impact on your business of increased Internet traffic from mobile devices, etc.?
AP: As there’s more and more wireless connectivity, it will increase the amount of load and traffic to the Internet. People will be constantly accessing their data, which means more traffic, which means more resources are needed during spikes. It comes down to being able to scale your Web site, for example, or your application — to scale your hosted server in an instant.
If you have to pick between a dedicated server where, when you need more resources, you have to take the site down and physically move the hard drive, or hosting your site on the cloud, where if you need more resources you just log in and (add space), I would pick the one where I don’t have to take the site down for half an hour. That ease of use in upgrading resources is one thing that will lead people to cloud.
Crain’s: Describe how the sales model works differently for cloud hosting, compared with a dedicated server. What’s the appeal of the pay-for-what-you-use model?
AP: When you log in, you can create cloud servers within a minute. You pay for what you use only, by the hour. So instead of paying a monthly fee for a dedicated server, with the cloud you can log in, create a virtual server for two days, or however long you need it, then delete it after that.
A retail business might need extra resources during the holiday season when they have 10 times the usual customers. They can sign up and launch 30 servers for that one week. Or developers might be interested in that, because they can create a sandbox environment for software they need to test in Linux or Windows. Or researchers doing computational research might need the extra processing power. Or other sites might just use the cloud for the whole month.
The cloud is the future. Everything eventually will be hosted on the Internet. Right now, though, we still have more dedicated server clients than anything else — about 3,000, compared with 1,000 on the cloud and another 2,000 using (defined portions of dedicated servers).
